The Pursuit Of Hedonism And Other Curiositys...

Being the 18 year old music lover that I am, I love a good night out.
Unfortunately, as is the way in life,  money and social restraints mean that quite often this is not possible. Either friends have work/other commitments, I have A level work to contend with or quite simply, I’m skint :’(.
Luckily, this half term is now in full swing and the week’s plans look good. A night out, football match, trips to visit friends at uni, a halloween house party and a friend’s 19th birthday are some of greatly needed festivities. Yay! Have to say, this first term has seemed to last forever!
But, what is the reason for highlighting this pass-time you may ask...
It’s the fact that on three separate occasions this week the word ‘Hedonism’ has popped up. For anyone who (like me until monday) doesn’t know what Hedonism is, the actual definition is the ‘Pursuit of or devotion to pleasure, especially to the pleasures of the senses’. So think; ‘Drugs, sex, rock and roll' and you’ve basically got some hedonism right there. It provokes the idea of living for the night and not thinking about tomorrow. Exactly what a ’night out’ can be (although don’t get me wrong I’m not that much of a rebel) :D.
This interests me as much as it does, purely because of how much these ideas are such a big part youth life. You only have to go into town on a saturday night to see the willing participants in this ‘pursuit’. I’m not saying it’s either a good or a bad thing to be hedonistic, I just find it so interesting. What is the point in which you stop thinking this way? For me it’s a balance... Having had a long term illness, I’m probably more aware of the responsibilities of keeping my body healthy. I certainly know how fragile it is and that we are not invincible. But, I only know this through experience. I completely understand there would be no reason to think you have to really look after yourself, until you have reason to. At the same time I think it’s all in moderation, life’s too short and you’ve got to go wild every so often. Where would we be if we couldn’t mosh every once in a while? ;)
Another thing that interests me is how much music ties in with hedonism. It has the power to console, heal, empathise and generally transport you from the place you’re in, to another way of thinking. This is the utter brilliance of sound.
With that in mind have a listen to ‘Pretty in Pink’ by the Psychedelic Furs, the soundtrack to the ace 80’s film of the same name.
Have a fab day, and remember there’s nothing wrong with a little hedonism every now and then...;)

Oasis - She's Electric

Hey!

Hope you're all good?

Seen as my day is now finished academically speaking, but I find myself waiting around for friends, it seems a good idea to write.
It's sooooooooo cold today, stating the obvious I know, but how are you meant to come out of sleep hibernation if it means hypothermia in the morning?!
Although it is October so I shouldn't complain really. I'm loving seeing the bright green turn to burnt orange on the trees and sticking the fire on with a cup of tea when I get home. (yeah, I'm an OAP really - I know).
October is a really cool month in general. The wonders of Halloween grace our homes and supermarkets, letting mean people like me enjoy the laugh of watching friends make idiots of themselves in costume, whilst I proceed to be an idiot myself. Nah, only joking... It's all about getting close friends round and scaring yourselves stupid on the latest horror film. I'm such a scaredy cat though, the kind who jumps just at the menacing instrumental :'(.
Another big part of my life in October is the tradition of 'Conkering'. This usually involves me and my dad trekking up to the local common and using a big stick to wack as many conkers down as we can. It's a tradition we've had for as long as I remember and one I hope I'll partake in at different times in my life. I'm not bored of it yet anyway!
I'm not sure why there's something exciting about opening those shells, being careful not to get spiked and seeing this perfectly formed deep chestnut brown thing inside. It sounds so uninspiring, but I think it's the caveman forager in me that loves the feeling of gaining things for free.
Bonfire night is another love of mine at this time of year, with the fireworks being so beautiful on the cold pitch black night of 5th November, yet being heated by the joys of Costa's newly released winter range. It's such a good time of year!
Anyway, moving on to music...
Today's song I've chosen from a band I absolutely love, but again haven't posted about yet.
 Oasis.
Being so iconic, most people know at least one of their songs, usually 'Wonderwall'. Honestly, it is a good song, but there are so many others that are brilliant too. Not just on that album ((What's The Story), Morning Glory), but on their other albums also, so have a listen!
I have to admit my favoured playlist does change along with my mood/music taste, but right now this song is up there in my favourites. It's just a cool song. Enough said.

Enjoy!
